“I will always be with you…”

Rising Democratic star Caroline Gerard hasn’t had an easy year. After losing her husband, she is raising two small children alone while trying to navigate the tricky and sometimes shallow halls on Capitol Hill. A string of nasty speeches has her scrambling to apologize to any number of candidates, including newly elected Republican Jack McIntyre. Falling in love again is the last thing on her mind.
Jack McIntyre might have a reputation as a playboy, but he has his sights set solely on his new colleague. Can he break through Caroline’s grief and capture her heart?
Told mostly in flashback and set against a chilling fascist backdrop, Dissident is a rollercoaster ride of political intrigue, passionate contemporary romance, and undying love.

For readers 18+. Ends on a cliffhanger.

“You’re lovely,” Jack murmured into her ear.

Was that directed at her, or was he mimicking the lyrics?

He was holding her closer than she thought was necessary for a dance between friends, but she wasn’t about to complain. They moved slowly but they’d been practicing all night and were starting to fatigue. Caroline leaned into his shoulder as if it were the most natural thing in the world, not realizing that they had almost completely stopped dancing.

“Caroline?” She heard Jack’s sweet voice again. “I’m not sure we’re dancing anymore.”

“Does it matter?” She lifted her head up.

Jack looked into her eyes. “Not unless it matters to you.”

He slowly brought his lips to hers. She didn’t turn away this time but closed her eyes and waited. It was sweet, kind, tender…and definitely not platonic. And it felt incredibly good, the pleasure wafting over her. She’d forgotten what it was like to be kissed, really kissed. She didn’t want him to stop. Jack cupped her cheek in his palm and pulled her closer to him with his other hand. Caroline brought her hands up to his hair and held them there, not wanting it to end.

She had been wondering what it would be like to run her hands through those gorgeous, perfect silver locks. His hair was soft, and she traced her fingers through it as Jack teased her tongue with his. She wanted to tug at it, bring him even closer to her, but then saw Nicky’s face in her mind and pulled away.

Caroline covered her mouth with her hand. “What was that for?”

Jack withdrew his hand from her waist. He seemed to be confused. “I-”

“It was the music,” she stammered. “We – it’s a romantic song. It’s hard not to get sucked into it. It’s fine.”

She thought Jack looked a little unnerved, but he recovered quickly. “Sure. Just a little kiss between friends. It didn’t mean anything.”

“Right.” Caroline kissed him on the cheek. “See? Nothing whatsoever.”

“Yeah.” Jack looked at his watch. “It’s late. I’d better head home. I have to get up pretty early tomorrow.”

“Not a problem.” She exhaled, grateful for the escape. “Thanks for the dance lessons.”

“Anytime,” Jack said. “I mean that.”

“I know.”

“See you on Tuesday?” he asked. “Lunch, maybe?”

“You bet.”

She turned off the music and escorted Jack up the stairs, watching him through the window as he started his Cadillac and drove away. It was nothing, that kiss. That song, the entire night…they’d gotten too caught up in the entire thing. Dancing could be an extraordinarily sensuous experience between two people who knew what they were doing, and Jack was an excellent instructor. It was only natural that she felt such incredible physical chemistry with him. That was it. Nothing more.
But Caroline was still trying to avoid the thought running through her mind – her increasing desire for him to turn his car around, run through her front door, and take her in his arms again.

Overcome with grief after losing the love of her life, Emma Donohue tries to put her life back together with the help of her best friend, a new job, and the interest of new friend Dane. But James’ voice in her head makes her think she’s going crazy. When she sees James—really sees him—she has to decide if hallucinations are taking over her life or if what James tells her about himself is true.

Guardian is book one in The Guardian Trilogy and is a paranormal romance between Emma and a new love interest, Dane, after Emma’s boyfriend James is killed in a car accident. The premise of the story was enthralling. James appeared to Emma and explained how he became a Guardian and what that entailed while allowing him to visit her from time to time. But in visiting her, he was also witnessing her life and how she was moving on. Emma was consumed with guilt over James’ death, believing it was her fault, and also didn’t want to move on since she still loved James so much. She had some difficult decisions to make throughout the book.

Starting with James’ death, the book backtracked a bit through Emma’s memories to show how their relationship came about. A little too much information was provided while still not truly selling me on their great love. Little tidbits of paranormal activity were hinted at in the beginning, but the first part of the book dragged for me before things really got moving.

The story did pick up pace and keep me interested until the end, although I had trouble with the timing of the plot. The entire book took place over about three months, and Emma’s best friend was pressuring her to move on with another guy only a month after James’ death. Dane also was a bit too forward for my liking. He would say he didn’t want to pressure Emma and understood she was grieving, but his actions were entirely contradictory. I did see a bit more connection between Emma and Dane though.

There were some editing and formatting problems, but one thing that confused me more than anything was a major part of the paranormal aspect. When James was with Emma, he wasn’t able to touch her. Hands and bodies passed through each other, but then they were able to hold hands, put arms around each other, and kiss.

This was a solid plot that left the door open for book two of the series without a cliffhanger but had some definite room for improvement.

Dirty South Drug Wars by Jae Hood

*I was provided a copy of Dirty South Drug Wars by the author in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Rue Monroe is no stranger to law enforcement, having grown up in a family where selling drugs is an everyday occurrence. Her father was killed when she was twelve in the middle of a drug war with their rival, the Montgomerys, so she wants nothing to do with the family business. Rue goes to school, works at her grandmother’s cake shop, and takes care of her sister and the house because her mother can’t be bothered to help.

At age eighteen, Rue meets a boy who makes her feel something for the first time in her life. As it turns out, he’s the boy she’s been dreaming about for the last six years. Unfortunately, he’s also her family’s biggest rival. But Tanner Montgomery won’t give up on his love for Rue. He’s determined to be with Rue regardless of their last names.

What should be a simple relationship between two eighteen-year-olds turns into an all-out war between the families. Lies are uncovered, and Rue questions everything she thought she knew about the rivalry. When secrets come to light, the danger mounts, and not everyone will make it out of this war alive.

Dirty South Drug Wars is the thrilling debut novel from Jae Hood. It is a compelling combination of romance and suspense that will have you ensconced in the lives of the characters and the world they live in. Set in rivaling small towns in the rural South, the book draws you in to the world of drug kingpins and cake decorating. This young adult story includes drugs and violence and is recommended for the older young adult audience.

Told in first person point of view by Rue, we get a first-hand look at the life of a teenager who has had to grow up before her time. Rue’s father was killed when she was twelve and her mother is an absentee parent. This leaves Rue in charge of her younger sister who has an untreated mental illness, not to mention working to pay the bills and take care of the house while still in school.

Rue’s characterization is contrasted nicely with her love interest, Tanner Montgomery. Tanner is reckless and enjoys a good thrill. He deals with the consequences of his actions after they’ve occurred. But both Rue and Tanner have to take on a little of the other’s personality when push comes to shove. Tanner needs to execute carefully laid plans, while Rue needs to put aside her responsibilities and act for her own interests for once.

The story is full of action and excitement within the lives of these teenagers. They’re thrust in the middle of a drug war and need to do what’s necessary for what they believe is right, figuring out who is an ally and who is the enemy along the way. It will keep you on the edge of your seat right to the very end.

Dirty South Drug Wars is a fantastic debut from Ms. Hood, and I look forward to reading more of her work.

Date published: September 30, 2015
When a monster owns your past, can you control your destiny?
Only daughter of the volatile President of the Black Shamrocks MC and long-suffering sister to four overprotective brothers, Madelaine O’Brien has survived circumstances that would have broken a lesser woman.
Mik ‘Mad Dog’ Kennedy is her salvation, her reward for continuing to fight, and the matching piece of her soul.
With her life happy and on track, will the reappearance of the monster from her past be the event that finally breaks her? Or will he be the catalyst she needs to put it all behind her, once and for all?
They say when life gives you lemons; make lemonade. What happens when life keeps sending you demons who refuse to stay buried? Do you lie down and accept defeat or rise to the seemingly unwinnable challenge, and start SEIZING CONTROL?
Disclaimer: This story contains graphic situations that may not be suitable for all readers.

Brendan smiles and shrugs. “I hit him. He trying to put your beautiful face in the cake.”
Relief flooding me that it was innocent, I laugh at Benji and he pokes his tongue out at me, a small smile gracing his face. My heart lightens further at his playfulness. I’ve missed it. Things are still pretty tense between us, nearly nine months after our blowout over Brendan. I can see where Benji and my friends are coming from but I can’t face the drama that I know will ensue if I break up with Brendan. Since I haven’t told anyone about my fears, Benji and Joel feel it’s okay to constantly voice their objections to my relationship with him. They normally finish their rants with nasty descriptions of my intelligence. It’s not fun.
“Fuck, I reckon it must be time for presents.” I hear a very familiar voice shout. My heart skips a beat, and my body practically melting, everything that’s wrong in my life fading into insignificance. I search the gaudily decorated, crowded hall for where his voice is coming from, grinning widely when I spot him.
Mik is standing on a chair near the front door with a big smile on his face. His radio silence during the last week had led me to believe that he wasn’t coming tonight, dampening my enthusiasm for the party.
Since Mik was voted as Sergeant at Arms for the MC nearly a year ago, he hasn’t been able to commit to anything because he never knows when he might be needed by the Club. What could possibly keep that bunch of men so busy has me stumped. Mik won’t tell me what he is up to whenever I ask and I stopped asking Dad years ago. I don’t think the Black Shamrocks are outlaws by definition, but I’m pretty sure they flirt with the thin blue line at times.
“Mik!” I shriek. “You came.”
I’m running towards him before he has time to jump down from the chair. Brendan grabs my arm, but I shrug him off, dodging the crowd who’ve turned to see who interrupted the speeches. Benji’s behind me trying to get his present from Mik first so I pick up my pace. Benji might be the football star but he’ll never be able to run as fast as me.
Once I’m close enough, I launch myself into Mik’s arms.
He catches me—just like I knew he would—because I’ve been launching myself at him like that since I was five years old. I wrap my legs around his waist and my arms around his neck and kiss his smooth cheeks. He holds my weight easily, with his arms folded under my ass, as he plants a quick kiss on my lips.
“Hey, Angel. Happy to see me?” he chuckles, his hazel eyes flashing at me.
I love how his eyes light up when he sees me. He gets a twinkle in them that I’m certain only I create. The feeling’s mutual; the only time I feel as if I’m as whole as I can be is when he’s around. He makes me feel as if the hole in my chest that’s been there since my mom died isn’t as big or as painful anymore. “Of course I am, you big idiot. I thought you weren’t coming.”

The two forged an unlikely friendship, but for Hailey, it became much more.

He wasn’t what she was expecting.

She wasn’t his type.

Or so she thought.

Too bad growing closer to Coll also meant questioning what she really wanted out of life. Would a few stolen moments and some weather-worn letters be enough to bind them together, or would the tides of uncertainty rip them apart?

Rules are important to Tess Richardson. Her life has always been structured by them. But the moment she steps off the boat and onto a Greek island for her internship, she realizes that rules can be broken. When Tess’ feelings for her billionaire boss Nico begin to grow, she’ll have to decide if she’s going to take a chance and break some rules of her own.

Nico Stephanos has lived a life with no rules. As the son of a business mogul, Nico’s had anything and everything he wants with no questions asked. Meeting Tess, his rule-following intern, begins to put things into a different perspective. While Nico learns to live life like the rest of the population, he discovers rules being broken in a different way. Nico will have to figure out where his true loyalties lie—with his family or with following the rules.

Speaking Greek is a contemporary romance set on the beautiful island of Georgios in Greece where Tess lands an internship with a shipping company. I appreciated the juxtaposition of the main characters’ traits—one was a rule-follower and one was a rule-breaker—which set up what each of them had to overcome. Tess needed to learn that sometimes it’s okay to break rules but you have to know which ones are okay to break. Nico needed to realize that the fortunate life he led wasn’t all it seemed.

Tess was a strong character, another quality I admired. She’d been brought up following rules her whole life and wasn’t about to give up everything she believed in just for a fling with a guy who was off-limits anyway. Even when she did bend the rules, she never totally lost her perspective. Nico’s character underwent great change and growth throughout the story, starting as a privileged playboy and finding his way to a more balanced life.

While the romance between polar opposites was attractive, the book didn’t hold me as much as I expected it to. I kept reading, interested to find out how things were going to play out with the relationship between the main characters as well as the business issues, but it was missing that wow factor that really grabs you. At the start, Nico was already thinking about how his life needed a change, so it was no surprise that his attraction to Tess made that happen. There was insta-attraction between the characters, and it felt like both were losing their hearts before really getting to know one another. I would have enjoyed seeing the Greek customs more if they were only shown instead of told.

Overall, I did enjoy the book and would read more in the series. I’ve read some of Ms. Laurence’s Lush series, which I really loved. Speaking Greek is book one in the Foreign Exchange series and can be read as a standalone.

*I was provided a copy of Bear Creek Road by the author in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Bear Creek Road tells the story of Laney Walker, a twenty-eight-year-old woman who feels old before her time thanks to recent events in her life. She’s just left everything and everyone she knows behind to start over, moving across the country to a small town where life is very different from what she’s used to. In Laney’s quest to get away from her problems, she finds herself a whole set of new ones in the shape of a run-down house and an attraction to a man who seems to want nothing to do with her.

The baffling Joe Boone takes it upon himself to fix Laney’s house. He arrives before the rest of the construction crew and is always the last to leave, yet he barely speaks to her. Despite warnings that Joe is no good, Laney can’t help but want to be close to him even though she has her own demons to contend with.

Laney unapologetically wears her flaws on her sleeve, recognizing her weaknesses while trying to find who she really is. Joe hides his flaws behind a beard and shaggy head of hair, only speaking when necessary. He’s a mystery you’ll want to unravel, and you’ll find yourself hanging on his every word.

This story is so different from everything I’ve read recently, with one of the main characters providing such limited dialogue, but that’s exactly what draws me to Joe. I can’t wait for his next words. While reading, I feel like I’m right there with Laney, wondering what’s going through Joe’s mind and what he means by the few words he does say. Add that to the sexual tension that builds between these two, and you’ll need something to cool off with when the tension reaches its boiling point!

Bear Creek Road is book one in the A Fresh Start series, but it’s a standalone novel. The characters are refreshingly real and down-to-earth, making this story a pleasure to read. I look forward to the next book in the series, Clallam Bay, which is due for release soon.

Artist (Redemption Reigns MC, #2)

Author: Juli Valenti
Title: Artist
Series: Redemption Reigns MC, #2
Pages: 193
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Date published: November 8, 2015

Cecili “Artist” Warren knew what she was getting into when she asked to prospect for Hells Redemption Motorcycle Club. At least, she thought she did. What she hadn’t been prepared for was the grueling training, long working hours at her tattoo shop, and falling for the man who’d tested her limits day after day.
Shakespeare Carter, Vice President of Hells Redemption, was ruthless in all aspects of life – from his role within the club to the demands he placed on Artist. It was no secret he was a hard man, but even ice melted when confronted with fire.
After a close friend of Artist’s is shot during a hit on the club, she becomes determined to seek out retribution. Little did she know that would be much harder than any of them ever expected.
With Shakespeare’s help, can she prove to be as strong as he thinks she is? And, more, will she come out alive on the other side and still recognize herself?

“How many times do I have to tell you not to lean on your back foot when firin?’ That’s why you’re missin,’” Shakespeare barked, scolding her, and it took everything she had not to bash him in the face with the butt of the rifle.
It had been eight months since Artist had been given her prospect patch and officially started her road into being a member of Hells Redemption. Since then, she’d been put through grueling tasks and training, testing her worth and her dedication to the MC, and to herself. Most days she fell in bed exhausted, too tired to think or relive the days. But some days, days like today, she was almost driven to violence.
“I’m trying, damn it,” she whispered through gritted teeth, re-centering herself to the target and preparing to fire once more.
Since Poet had put Shakespeare, HR’s Vice President, in charge of her gun skills, it was his pleasure to put her through hell. When she got up in the morning, it was a vigorous workout routine before hopping on her 2013 CVO Harley and meeting him at the shooting field about seven miles from the clubhouse. There, he would quiz her on the weapons he brought, put her to task cleaning and putting them together, before spending hours target practicing. From there, she was sent on her way, sore and exhausted, to her day job.
It wasn’t the training, the gruelingly long days, or the chill of the New Mexico winter that bothered her, though. What bothered Artist was the man’s attitude. Shakespeare was constantly on her ass about everything – her feet weren’t perfectly positioned, her arm wasn’t extended the way he wanted it, she was relying on sights instead of instinct. It was irritating as hell. Two months ago, she’d called him on it exactly one time.
“Excuse me, prospect?”
Her blood chilled, immediately cooling her temper at the tone of his voice. Her VP’s face had hardened, an eyebrow raised, framing a dangerous expression. Artist sighed, knowing she’d lost the battle and points before she’d even been given the chance to play.
“Nothing, VP. Sorry.”
The man standing before her seemed impossibly large, his stature almost dwarfing her as he stepped forward. He grabbed the pistol from her hands and leaned in close. “I’ll stop treatin’ you like a fuckin’ idiot when you stop actin’ like one. We’re done for the day. Get gone.”
Artist nodded, her eyes to the grass and dirt at her feet, ashamed to look at him. She knew better than to snap at any of the members, especially him, and it didn’t take a rocket scientist to know he was going to tell Poet. Who, in turn, would tell Titan. The day was getting better and better.
“Oh, and Artist?” he called, causing her to turn back. She swallowed her pride and glanced up at him, meeting his eyes with sheer force of will though fearing the threat that was sure to come. “Free pass this time around – but don’t push me. You won’t like what happens.”
