In Breaking Free and With Brave Wings we met Noah Collins, Assistant Director and life of the party. Now Noah has his own book, aptly titled Noah, where we pick up several years later when he thinks his life is in order and he’s happily committed to his girlfriend. But Noah’s life gets thrown upside down in a matter of hours when he finds his girlfriend cheating on him and then loses his entire family in a plane crash. If you haven’t read the other two books, no worries because Noah can easily stand on its own.

Julian is Noah’s stepnephew, someone Noah hasn’t had much chance to get to know over the years. He’s also the only person who understands what Noah’s going through considering Julian also lost his family.

Noah and Julian form a bond over their grief and begin to help each other work through their pain. They recognize how their bond could become unhealthy by depending on one another too much, especially when things become sexual. While Noah doesn’t identify himself as gay or even bisexual, he’s never been opposed to same-sex relationships. He’s just never had many relationships at all. The pair need to heal separately before they can explore the attraction between them.

Both Noah and Julian are well-developed characters. We see Julian as shy and timid, yet he excels in music and is able to express himself more freely through his songs. He has deep-seated issues to work through, and even though the book is written in Noah’s point of view, we get a good glimpse of how Julian grows and becomes more assertive throughout his healing.

Noah has always been a take-charge kind of guy and the life of any party. But in his grief over losing his whole family, he becomes lost. Add in what feels like an unnatural attraction to his nephew, and Noah doesn’t know which end is up. He wants to help Julian as much as he can without overstepping any lines, but the closer they get the more his attraction grows. It’s so interesting to watch Noah go through all these changes. And just when things seem to be going well, other issues pop up that the pair have to handle together.

One of the things I love about this story, and all of Cara Dee’s books, is the way the secondary characters are incorporated. While they’re in the background, the writing style allows their personalities to shine through and builds depth to the plot. It’s also great to get a peek at what’s going on in the lives of the characters I loved so much in the previous books.

Another stellar story from Ms. Dee. My other reviews of her books can be found under the Author Spotlight tab.

Exxel Jensen has spent his entire life finding ways to cope with his mental illness. Although his family and friends know he’s depressed, they really don’t know the true extent of it. Exxel lives with another person in his world, a person no one else can see or hear—the Heckler. Drinking, drugs, and cutting help Exxel banish the Heckler, but only temporarily. Exxel has a loving and supportive wife who would do anything to help him, and he also has a baby on the way. He should be happy, but happiness is the one thing Exxel can’t feel.

Heckled is a dark drama that draws you in to the main character’s world from the start. The descriptions of what’s going on inside Exxel’s head leave you feeling the pain, uncertainty, and depression right along with him. While it’s easy to ask how anyone could be unhappy in Exxel’s situation, especially with a beautiful wife and new baby coming, this book drops the reader right into the midst of Exxel’s suffering and provides a deep understanding of what he’s going through.

But the story does even more than that, allowing the reader to see how the people around Exxel feel as well. Depression doesn’t only affect the person who suffers from it. Friends and family are just as involved, and this story does a wonderful job of bringing that to light. Helena is a devoted wife. All she wants is to help Exxel, but how can you help someone who doesn’t even feel worthy of getting help? His mother, brother, and best friend also try in their own way to do what they can for Exxel because they love him.

This book is very real and brings out a lot of emotion. I found myself in tears on several occasions as the characters all struggled through the day to day issues surrounding depression. It’s a very different type of story, and while I wholeheartedly recommend it, it’s definitely not for everyone due to the dark theme.

Elaina Cooper’s world was turned upside down on what was supposed to be the happiest day of her life. She was about to marry Henry Daniels, the man of her dreams — or so she thought. Just as she was to walk down the aisle, screams pierced the air.

In the days that followed, questions lingered in Elaina’s mind. Why did Henry seem to know so much about what was happening? And why did she feel like he was keeping secrets from her? Henry knew that his haunted past would eventually catch up to him…in more ways than one. Through all of this, he must face his demons, and Elaina must decide whether she can accept who he is. Henry is determined to fight to the very end to make their sexy, mercurial relationship work no matter what staggers in their path.

Along with their ragtag band of survivors, they must travel south to face Henry’s fears. There will be joys and loss but, in the end, is love enough to hold them together?

He started to give me a peck on the cheek, but then he stopped himself. I could see the pain in his eyes. I reached up and brushed my fingers down his cheek. He closed his eyes, exhaling as I slid my fingers over his stubble.

When he opened them again, they were swimming with tears. His eyes wandered about my face, searching for the answer to the question that was lingering between us. He looked down, and his jaw trembled. He looked back up at me, lips parted like he was about to say something. But then he just turned away and closed the door.

I had broken his heart. I absolutely crushed this already broken man. I couldn’t believe I did that to him. I wasn’t sure if we would ever be able to get back to what we had, and the doubt that radiated from him told me he felt the same.

He had secrets. Secrets that he desperately wanted to share but, for some reason, felt that he couldn’t. I don’t know if it was a trust issue or what. But whatever it was, it was killing both of us.

It was killing us, period.

Talent (Descended from Myth Book 2) by Erin McFadden

Talent (Descended from Myth Book 2) by Erin McFadden

Claire Montgomery is a Talent who doesn’t trust the very organization charged with protecting her. She is able to see into people’s minds and help correct things that are wrong, this Talent descended from the original nine muses. But when using her Talent, Claire develops headaches and other problems, and those around her are at a loss as to why. Now she’s about to be assigned her own Watcher from the Guardians, and she’ll have to figure out who she can really trust to keep her safe.

Porter McGavin has PTSD from serving in the military. He suffers alone, until he’s offered a position with the Guardians and he finally finds a place he fits in. When temporarily assigned to watch Claire, the two find an unexplained connection, but with Claire’s trust issues and Porter’s past coming back to haunt him, it will be a race against the clock to save both their lives.

Talent is book two of the Descended from Myth series and is a paranormal romance. Although a standalone book, there were some issues that were not fully discussed in this book, which may have been more thoroughly delved into in book one. Claire’s past was alluded to many times, and I had a general idea of what had happened to her, but there were missing pieces of information that might have rounded out my understanding of her character.

The first half of the book moved too slowly to hold my attention. The narrative was very telling, trying to catch the reader up on events that had already happened, and we learned about the characters through narrative rather than through actions.

Although the book got off to a very slow start, the second half was much more action packed and held my interest more. The plot was interesting, and I appreciated the connection between Claire and Porter and how their lives were intertwined once things got moving. The way all the pieces of the puzzle came together was satisfying and entertaining.

There were a lot of tense changes, which drew me out of the story, among other editing errors. Long paragraphs where one person’s dialogue was mixed with another person’s thoughts were also distracting. I had a difficult time visualizing Porter because the picture on the cover didn’t match his description in the book. My attention to the plot would have been stronger without these disruptions.

Three stars for this interesting paranormal romance.

Noah by Cara Dee – Teaser and Pre-order

Noah by Cara Dee

Coming April 26, 2016! Available for pre-order now.

29755537Have you ever woken up and expected to see destruction everywhere?

In 48 hours, I lost everything. I came home to find my girlfriend of four years with another man. The next day a plane crash ripped my family away from me, shattering me in the process. In many ways, I died that day, too. The fun-loving man who’d lived in the fast lane and loved his career in the film industry was gone. Left was a forty-year-old shell that dwelled at the bottom of a bottle.

Only one person knew what I was going through. My sister’s stepson, who hadn’t been on the plane. Julian knew what it was like to lose everyone he loved, too. He’d stopped showing up at reunions when he was a teenager, so I didn’t know him very well. But I told him at the memorial service he could come out and visit me in LA whenever. One day he did, and I guessed it was as good a day as any to start picking up the pieces and see what was left of us.
