Shaye Harland has been planning her wedding since she was a little girl. Now that the big day is almost here, she has a million things to do as planned out in her All Things Nuptials journal in order to make it the best day of her life. But just as she had to realize that her Mr. Perfect is Mr. Perfect-For-Her, Shaye may have to make some compromises in the wedding of her dreams as things begin to unravel. Thankfully, her husband-to-be Del is more than understanding of her need for perfection, and with the help of some friends they are able to roll with the punches leading up to the altar.

Kissing The Bride is book 7.5 of the Due South series, and is one of the few that is best read only if you’ve already read the others in the series. Not to say it couldn’t stand on its own, but it’s a short story that is a fun interlude in the life of the characters who live in Oban. The story follows Shaye and Del to the altar, starting a week before the wedding.

I truly enjoyed seeing this glimpse into all the characters’ lives. While the story focuses on Shaye and Del, their friends are very involved. Ms. Alvarez never disappoints with keeping her characters true to their characterizations, and this story is no different. Shaye’s planning becomes compromised by several unfortunate incidents including a coffee spill, a storm, and an ornery sea lion. Del, who loves Shaye even when she’s become a bridezilla, does his best to pick up the pieces and create the perfect wedding for Shaye. Meanwhile, Shaye has to learn to loosen up a bit and relax her standards, because at the end of the day, all that matters is she’s marrying her Mr. Perfect-For-Her.

Bravo to Ms. Alvarez for another entertaining glimpse into life in Oban.

Boundary: The Other Horizons Trilogy (Book 1) by Mary Victoria Johnson

To an outside observer, Penny and her five friends live a life of luxury. They have everything they need provided for them, they live in a mansion, and they can do almost whatever they want within the boundary of that space. But it’s that boundary that makes Penny question everything around her. Touching the invisible wall surrounding the property will fry someone to a crisp, and Penny and her friends are essentially being held hostage inside it. They’re not exactly being held against their will, at least not until Penny begins questioning how they got there and why they can’t leave.

Penny’s curiosity not only angers their already sinister master, but it also begins a series of trials that pit friend against friend because the winner will get to leave the boundary. Alliances are formed and help is provided from unexpected sources, but not everything is as it seems. As the trials become more and more dangerous, it will be every man for him or herself.

Boundary is book one of the young adult The Other Horizons Trilogy, and although it is a standalone book, it does set the stage for the next book in the series. It is full of action and adventure, mystery, and fantasy, as well as being historical. This made for quite an interesting combination.

Although the story felt slow-moving at first, there was always the feeling that something more was under the surface. I immediately wanted to read on to find out why Penny and her friends were not able to leave the boundary. Even the somewhat mundane parts showing everyday life at the manor kept me involved and turning pages. The author did a good job of including small details that played into the plot in a larger way.

Overall this was a great book that I enjoyed reading, however I was left confused by some issues at the end. I’d be giving away too much of the story to go into detail, so suffice it to say these were not the type of issues that will be resolved in the next book; rather, they were the type that were resolved within this book but either done too quickly or without enough explanation for me. Still, I appreciated the journey and would be likely to read more by this author.

Excerpt

After Talmadge’s colossal gaffe yesterday at Joe’s, the chances of Miranda letting him take over the renovations at the inn were about as good as her contractor giving back her money.

The way he saw it, he had two options.

One: play the I’m-your-creditor card and take charge of the renovations whether she agreed or not. When it came to any kind of building project, everyone followed his lead. Hell, he’d earned that leadership roll in world of architecture.

Miranda’s face glowed red with anger.

Right. Option one wasn’t working out so well.

He shifted to option two: make her think she was still in charge.

“Don’t be foolish, Miranda. You need help with this place.” Talmadge was trying real hard to keep his mind and eyes off the taut nipples showing through her thin shirt. The moment he’d turned and saw her standing in the dining room staring at him with sleepy eyes and messy pillow hair…glaring at all of them over the absurdity of superheroes while wearing silly cartoon pajamas… Well, hell. His throat had closed up, and he’d wanted to toss her over his shoulder and take her to back to bed. This time with him in it too.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve only had one goal: survival. It’s what I know. There is no future beyond making it through another night and getting my hands on as much money as possible, by any means necessary. Pride and dignity are things I can’t afford.

It’s been the worst year yet—and not because I live on the streets. That’s nothing compared to being separated from my little girl. But I do what I can, and I send any money I make for her care. I can only hope she remembers me. I’m past desperate, needing her to know how much I love her and that I’ve done everything in my power to make it back to her.

The day I stepped off the bus in Seattle, I saw him. Adrian appeared at a time I most needed a helping hand, and his habit of rescuing strays became my salvation. He gave me hope. He taught me to dream about something I’d never dared to wish for.

How to Save a Life by Emma Scott

How to Save a Life by Emma Scott

5 out of 5 Stars

*I was provided a copy of How to Save a Life by the author in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Josephine Clark is scarred in more ways than one. Weeks away from graduating high school and starting out on her own, she meets Evan Salinger, the town freak. Evan has been labeled a mental case by the rest of the students. He claims to see things in his dreams he otherwise has no way of knowing, and Jo is warned to stay away from him. But Jo is a freak in her own mind, and the pair quickly find solace in each other, building a soul-deep relationship. With Evan by her side, Jo’s future looks a little brighter, until they’re ripped apart by circumstances outside their control.

Several years later, Jo is hanging on by a thread. When Evan finds her, the thread snaps and they have to go on the run from the law. Evan’s visions keep them moving in what he’s sure is the right direction, although things only seem to be getting worse from Jo’s perspective. It’ll take a lot of faith for them to finally be able to live the life they’ve dreamed of all these years.

How to Save a Life is a second chance romance with a bit of paranormal fueling the plot. Even if you’re not a fan of paranormal stories, this is one book you should take a chance on. The paranormal aspect is so well incorporated it feels like a natural part of Evan’s character. He’s just a regular high school kid who happens to have dreams that end up coming true. He intensely feels the visions, and they guide all his decisions in life. Because of their love—an emotion foreign to both main characters at the start of the novel—Jo is able to trust in Evan’s instincts even if she doesn’t understand them. The journey this takes them on is intense and thrilling, resulting in a book I couldn’t put down once I started reading it.

Both Jo and Evan are flawed characters, which made me love them all the more. Issues in Jo’s past have shaped who she is now, and it’s easy to understand why she doesn’t trust many people. Evan knows he can’t depend on anyone but himself, and he also understands there are sacrifices he has to make in order to reach his destiny. He has to trust his visions, even when he doesn’t fully understand them.

The romance between the two was well-developed even though it occurred over a short period of time. It was clear these two people were meant to be together, but the journey throughout the book made for a wild ride that kept me on the edge of my seat, waiting and hoping they would find their happily-ever-after.

Ms. Scott has a way with drawing out emotions to pull the reader into the world of her characters. Several times I was in tears over these characters. I highly recommend this book and will definitely read more by this author.
