***STANDALONE new adult romance from the author of The Butterfly Project and the Full Tilt Duet***

Darlene Montgomery has been to hell and back…more than once. After a stint in jail for drug possession, she is finally clean and ready to start over. Yet another failed relationship is just the motivation she needs to move from New York to San Francisco with the hopes of resurrecting her dance career and discovering that she is more than the sum of her rap sheet. As Darlene struggles in her new city, the last thing she wants is to become entangled with her handsome—but cranky—neighbor and his adorable little girl…

Sawyer Haas is weeks away from finishing law school, but exhaustion, dwindling finances, and the pressure to provide for himself and his daughter, Olivia, are wearing him down. A federal clerkship–a job he desperately needs–awaits him after graduation, but only if he passes the Bar Exam. Sawyer doesn’t have the time or patience for the capricious—if beautiful—dancer who moves into the apartment above his. But Darlene’s easy laugh and cheerful spirit seep into the cracks of his hardened heart, and slowly break down the walls he’s resurrected to keep from being betrayed ever again.

When the parents of Olivia’s absentee mother come to fight for custody, Sawyer could lose everything. To have any chance at happiness, he must trust Darlene, the woman who has somehow found her way past his brittle barbs, and Darlene must decide how much of her own bruised heart she is willing to give to Sawyer and Olivia, especially when the ghosts of her troubled past refuse to stay buried.

Forever Right Now Blogger Teaser

Excerpt:

“Who are you?” he demanded rudely, shifting the diaper bag higher on his shoulder while hoisting his little girl in his other arm. He was six feet of hotness in a rumpled suit, glaring at me with suspicion in his dark eyes.

“I…I’m your new neighbor?” It sounded more like a question; as if I needed this guy’s permission to live. I straightened to my full height. “I just moved in upstairs. I’m a dancer. Well, I was. Had to take some time off but I’m going to get back into it soon…ish.” I put on my friendliest smile. “I’m a massage therapist now. Just got my license and…”

My words died under Sawyer’s withering stare.

“A dancer. Fantastic,” he said bitterly. “Just what I always wanted. Someone leaping and thumping above me, waking my kid up and disturbing my studies at all hours of the night.”

I planted my hands on my hips. “I can’t dance in a dinky apartment, and besides…”

Words failed me again as the sharp planes and hard angles of Sawyer’s face melted when his daughter–I guessed her to be about a year old–suddenly clapped her small hand over his chin. Sawyer’s hard gaze softened, and his broad mouth turned up in a smile–a beautiful smile I was sure only his little girl ever got to see, and so full of love that for a moment I could hardly breathe.

Dylan Walker has spent six years trying to move on from the loss of his girlfriend, Presley Cooper. Motivated by grief and the desire to do for others what he couldn’t do for her, he burns the candle at both ends to make it through medical school. After graduation he moves west, putting as much distance as possible between his past and his present.

Or so he thought.

Unknowingly, Dylan has been set on a path that will destroy everything he thought he knew. All the pain, all the grief, was all for nothing. With the help of an unexpected ally, Dylan must find the answers and save the girl he loves before it’s too late.

Deceit.

Betrayal.

Revenge.

A second chance at love.

But first, he must find a way to make her remember her past. Remember him. Remember everything.

“You know, Dylan, there are many hospitals you could work at in New York. If I didn’t believe your moving to California with all those hippies was the best thing for you, I might beg you to stay.”

An unexpected laugh bubbled from his chest as he shook his head. His grandmother put up a good front about being accepting of different cultures and lifestyles, but try as she might, she was blue-blooded through and through. Growing up in one of the wealthiest families in New York had a way of doing that to a person. He had been like that once, before he lost her. The familiar hollowness that always came with her memory began to swell. He couldn’t deal with that right now.

“You’re the one who suggested I interview at Grace Hospital in the first place. If it weren’t for you, I never would have considered moving to California. Also,” Dylan exhaled. “I need a change, Grandmother. There are too many memories here. Too many ghosts.” When he noticed her frown, he looked away and pushed his messy dark blond hair out of his eyes. He needed a haircut. It was one of many things he’d neglected recently.

“I know you loved her, Dylan. I loved her too, but it’s been six years. It’s time to accept what happened and move forward.”

“Two,” he corrected, trying not to flinch. Her words felt like a physical blow. “Until two years ago, I still had hope that one day…” Dylan pulled in a deep breath and pushed his memories into the darkest corner of his mind. “That’s why I’m moving to California. Going to college at Penn State, staying close to home, those were things we were supposed to do together. I’ve lived the life we planned without her. I thought it would get better, but it hasn’t. I need to go where everything I see doesn’t remind me of her.”

Dylan stood in front of his bathroom sink, a towel wrapped around his waist as he wiped the fog from the mirror. He studied his face, the lines that creased the skin around his blue-gray eyes and the shadows underneath that never seemed to fade. His eyes dropped lower, and his hand lifted of its own accord to trace the wing of the butterfly tattooed over his heart. The red ink curved and twisted to form a beautiful wing on one side, while the other was nothing but sharp, broken lines, the decayed black wing dripping with ink. It was the perfect tribute to Presley. She used to say he made her flutter. He regretted never telling her she did the same to him. When she left, she took that feeling with her.

Uncomplicated Choices by Cara Dee

“Choosing you would complicate everything, yet it’s the most uncomplicated choice I’ve ever made.”

Father and Daughter Playing Together at the Beach at Sunset. Hap

Available NOW on Amazon!

When life gave you lemons, you learned who stayed and made lemonade with you. Or something to that effect. And the day Ellis Hayes kidnapped me—or, borrowed a yacht and didn’t know I was on board—he’d definitely been handed too many lemons.

We faced a dilemma when I woke up hungover in the middle of the ocean. He needed to get the hell out of town to do some soul-searching and decide whether or not to divorce his wife, and I needed to get back on land because humans didn’t belong on the water. There was also better cell service on land, and I had my four-year-old daughter on vacation in Paris to check in with.

Then I remembered I wasn’t a complete tool. Ellis wasn’t doing all right, and we were practically family. I had to stay and make lemonade with him. Of course, me being me, seemingly undateable and complicated, I had to develop feelings for him, too.

Uncomplicated Choices 4

Excerpt 1:

It looked like I was gonna poke him with some flirting, after all, because when he had one foot in the tender and the other on the yacht, I couldn’t resist.

“Has anyone ever told you how delicious you look with your legs spread?”

He grabbed the cooler from me. “No, you’d be the first. Thank you for being gentle.”

Sad day for me; he’d figured out my game and didn’t let it ruffle his feathers this time. On the other hand, now I could add witty to the list. I loved witty comebacks.

“In fact…” He pointed at a duffel on the platform, which I handed over. “I barely felt anything.”

“What the—” I stared at him, incredulous. Did he really go there? Oh, he did. That sexy, sly son of a bitch. “You actually… Wow.”

Uncomplicated Choices 3

Excerpt 2:

As I checked the time on my phone, I thought I could text Ellis, but a message from Marilyn popped up right then and there.

Hello, Casey. I have some pressing matters I’d like to discuss with you in regards to Ellis’s and my son. Rather, your involvement. Do you mind if I come over after work?

I rubbed my forehead, the unease spreading through me like wildfire. This is it. Things were going too fucking smoothly, and now…now, fuck.

Swallowing the rising anxiety, I fired off a quick reply.

Yeah, sure. I’ll be at home.

And Ellis wouldn’t be. He was in and out of meetings all day and would be home late. I should call him, though. Unless he already knew she was coming? No, he would’ve given me a heads up.

Drumming out the jitters was an impossible feat now, so I turned to Beyoncé. When life gave you lemons, she knew a thing or two about lemonade.

I was going to need vodka with mine.

About the Author:

I’m often stoically silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

Sugar & Gold Cover FINAL

“I loved you before. I will love you forever.”

Nikolai Alexei Young was born with a special gift…one he’d do anything to lose. The heart and soul of every person he comes into contact with is an open book to his heightened senses. Colorful emotions, whispers of thoughts, the sour tastes of old memories…He feels them all. The sci-fi books would call him an empath. For Nikolai, his ability has made him an exile. He roams the U.S. alone, avoiding the glut of life in big cities, and using his innate talents to win money in underground poker games. Just enough to keep going, one town to the next. He has no hope that his life can be anything else, until he meets her…

At nineteen, Fiona Starling was trapped in an ugly, desperate situation until she freed herself the only way she knew how. Now three years later, living outside Savannah, Georgia, she is rebuilding her life on her own terms; seizing every moment and saving every penny so that she might fulfill her dream of moving to the raw wilderness of Costa Rica. But behind her carefree smile beats the heart of a lonely young woman haunted by her past, until a chance encounter with a tattooed stranger changes everything…

Fiona takes Nikolai under her roof for three sultry nights, waiting out the rain of a summer storm. She grows more and more fascinated by this brooding stranger with whom she shares an intense physical connection—a connection so strong, she wonders if there is something between them beyond lust and passion. Nikolai is shocked to discover that Fiona calms the raging turmoil in his heart. She alone silences the din of other people’s lives, and envelops him in the sweet beauty of her inner self.

Every moment he’s with her—every touch of her skin—brings him closer to the peace that’s been eluding him his entire life.

But Fiona harbors secrets that she is too terrified to reveal. After Nikolai confesses his unique ability, she is caught between wanting to believe him and fearing he’ll eventually unearth her own dark past. When the unthinkable happens, Fiona’s plans come crashing down, and Nikolai discovers his hated ability might be the only thing that can save the woman he loves.

Excerpt:

She breathed a genuine laugh and held my gaze. Everything about her was pink; her drink, her hair, the bright halo of glimmering dust that surrounded her.

Kindness, compassion, charity. Those were the feelings I associated with pink.

I hadn’t seen it this strong in anyone in a long time.

Fiona clinked her glass to my bottle. “Thanks for taking care of my over-eager dance partner, Nik. And for the drink.”

“Sure.”

She sipped her Cosmo. “Not much of a talker, are you?” Her eyes were impossibly bright, her smile showing a broad mouth and full lips.

“Club’s not a great place for talk,” I said.

“True,” she said, “but here we are.”

Here we are…

A short silence fell.

“Nik,” Fiona mused. “Nik, Nik,” she said again, in a light, sing-song manner. “Short for Nicholas?”

“Nikolai,” I said.

“Oh, I like that.” Her colors warmed and sweetened, like an invitation, drawing me closer. “Are you Russian? You don’t have an accent.”

“My mother is.”

“Do you speak it?”

“Yeah,” I said. “I picked some up.”

She scooted closer on her seat. “Say something in Russian.”

“Like what?”

“I’m not picky. I can’t speak a word so anything is going to sound good.”

I thought for a second and then spoke aloud the only thought I had in my head.

“Ti samaya krasivaya devushka na svete.”

Fiona’s smile widened and the bright wisps of her happiness wrapped around me. I wanted to take in more of it. Which made no sense at all. With other women, their scents were so often cloying and unwanted like the air wasn’t mine to breathe.

What the fuck is wrong with you? Get a grip.

I sucked down a long swig of beer. Fiona watched me, her eyebrows raised, then she laughed. “Um, Nik? You realize you’re supposed to tell me what you said, right?”

I shrugged and my lips twitched. “Don’t remember.”

Fiona laughed again. “Liar.”

We both took a sip from our drinks and let a little silence fall between us. A nice silence.

“That was lovely, your Russian,” Fiona said eventually. “Whatever you said, it sounded…sexy.”

My gaze swung to her eyes. “Yeah?”

She tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “Yeah. I was going to say something harmless like ‘unique’ or ‘exotic’, but I’d rather be honest with you, Nikolai. I don’t like playing games.” Her brow furrowed slightly. “I don’t like it at all.”

I sensed a shadow starting to creep over her. Something old and full of pain. Driving it away suddenly became my only goddamn purpose in life.

“I guess you’re not going to like me much then,” I said. “I play games constantly. Every day.”

A smile crept over her lips. “Is that so?”

“Sure,” I said. “Omaha, Texas Hold’em, stud, draw, lowball, high-low split…”

She laughed, flaring pink again, and the shadow around her retreated. “A joke and a smile too. I was beginning to wonder if you ever smiled.”

I shrugged. “It happens.”

“And those games, they’re all poker, right? You play poker every day?”

“Not every day. Most days.”

“For a living?”

“No, I’m a…” I coughed. “I’m a salesman. Motorcycle parts. I travel a lot for the job, and finding poker games in each city is sort of my hobby.”

My standard lie, though I hated laying it on her. I knew plenty of grinders who lived off their poker winnings, but that was for the love of the game. I played because thanks to the ken it was easy to win, and I’d never cared that it was cheating. It was the only way to put my strange ability to use that I knew of, and it allowed me to give a big fuck you to the universe for cursing me with it in the first place.

But lying to Fiona felt dirty. Even when haunted by bad memories she was luminous, while I was tatted and stained, as if the ink on my hands would bleed out and onto the white of her dress if I touched her.

She cocked her head at me, wearing a perplexed little smile. “You don’t look like a salesman.” Her eyes drifted over my tattooed arms and neck, to the talons piercing my ears. “When I think of ‘traveling salesman’ I picture a middle-aged guy in a suit with a suitcase full of encyclopedias.”

“No suitcase,” I said. “Catalogues and order forms.”

“And you travel a lot?”

“Almost non-stop.”

“That sounds lonely.”

“You do something long enough, you get used to it.”

“I know what you mean,” Fiona said, a tinge of darkness around her words—that shadow started to creep back until she buried it. “But the poker makes it fun?”

“Breaks up the monotony of the road.”

“Do you make a lot of money?” she said, then laughed, beautiful in her self-consciousness. “Sorry, I’m not asking for your bank balance, I just meant, are you any good at it?”

“I’m really fucking good at it,” I said.

Her eyebrows shot up and she nudged my arm with a laugh. “If you don’t say so yourself.”

“Maybe I feel like being honest with you too.” I could feel where she touched me, a tingling heat that was slow to fade.

“I like that.” She swirled her cherry around in her drink by its stem. “So are you in town, selling motorcycle parts, for very long?”

“Couple of days.”

“I hope the storm doesn’t put a damper on your business.”

“It won’t.”

“You’re lucky. At my job, we’ve been given the next few days off.”

“You sound bummed about that.”

“Every penny counts.” She met my eye. “I’m moving out of the country very soon and want to save up.”

I took a sip of my beer. I’d known Fiona for five minutes, but the idea of her moving any further away than her seat at the bar filled me with inexplicable dread.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

But it wasn’t what was wrong with me, anymore. It was what was right. The girl exuded a calm that danced along my skin, and when I inhaled, it was like breathing in the scent of something delicious but far away. The thrumming life all around me grew quiet. For the first time, I felt close to peace, and I wanted more.

If I touched her…

“Nikolai?” Her blush matched the color of her drink. She rested her chin in her hand. “Not to sound cheesy but you’re undressing me with your eyes.”

I felt heat creep along my neck and a bumbling apology rose to my mouth. Instead, I held her gaze, leaned closer to her. “You want to know what I said to you in Russian?”

Her eyes were bright and I could feel her draw closer to me. “Yes. Tell me.”

“I said that you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”

The deep pink of her darkened to red. Not the ugly red of hate or anger, but the heated red of intense want. Hers matched mine. I wanted that strange sense of peace she exuded, but I wanted to touch her too. To take her hard and lose myself in her completely.

Fiona held my gaze. “I don’t think that’s true, but the way you look at me…I can almost believe it. Like how you watched me on the dance floor. I liked you watching me, Nikolai. It was as if I could feel your eyes on me before I found you.”

You found me…

He pulled back a little, resting his forehead on mine to look into my eyes. To cripple me in ways I never thought possible. There was a hunger in his glare that I couldn’t quite place, he wasn’t even touching me and yet I still felt him all over. Both of us were panting, our breathing mirroring one another’s, our hearts escalating higher and higher and beating beside each other.
So intense.
So consuming.
So mind-blowing.
In that second, in that minute, in that hour… I wanted him.
I wanted his touch, I wanted his kiss, I wanted his taste, I wanted all his movements, all his adoration and his love, all his devotion, his laugh, his smile, everything, anything.
Every. Last. Part.
Him.
I reached for the front of his shirt, unbuttoning it and pulling it away from his body and he let me. I touched the pulse of his neck, down to his heart, passed his taut abs until I reached his belt. The warmth and velvetiness of his skin made my sex clench and my stomach flutter. The butterfly feeling never got old. It was becoming one of my favorite feelings.
A feeling only he could ignite in me.
I gasped when he unexpectedly gripped my hand, stopping me.
“Are you sure?” he huskily rasped, my favorite sound in the world.
Before I could assure him, tell him what I felt so deeply in my heart, tell him how much he meant to me, how much I wanted to be his and only his, how much I wanted him to undo me.
Own me.
He hoarsely murmured against my lips, “Suga’ once I start there will be no going back. I won’t stop until I’ve explored every last inch of your flesh… until I’m etched so far into your heart that you’ll never be able to touch your skin and not feel me.”
With wide eyes I swallowed hard and breathed out, “Promise?”
“Always.”
He let go of my hand and I unclasped his belt, next were his slacks, pulling them apart and lowering the zipper. Before I could touch him where I really wanted to, where I had been craving since the second I saw him in his black tuxedo, he slapped my hand away.
“This isn’t about me. This is about you.”
His gaze set me on fire, my heart kicked into overdrive. I loved having him look at me like that. Knowing I never wanted him to stop looking at me in that way, the way that made me feel like we were the only two people in
the world, like I was the only girl in the world. He had my heart in his hands, to do what he pleased with.
I knew right then and there that I would never be able to go without him.
He licked his lips and leaned in to kiss me. The second his tongue touched mine, it turned into its own moment, its own creation, its own world. His body fell forward and mine backward, pushing me further into my mattress. My legs spread wider and he readily lay in between them, placing all his weight on his arms that were cradling my face. The room was dim, but I could sense him everywhere and all at once.
“You’re so fucking beautiful, Aubrey. So damn beautiful,” he groaned into the side of my neck as he placed soft kisses down to my cleavage and toward my nipple. He sucked it into his mouth as his hand caressed my other breast, leaving me withering beneath him. Chills running up and down my waiting body. My back arched off the bed, wanting more and he obliged. I could feel his erection on my wet core as he purposely moved his hips, grinding against my heat, creating a delicious tingling that I felt all over.
I sucked in my bottom lip to conceal the moan that was about to escape.
“Darlin’, I want you to make every fucking noise possible. Do you understand me?”
I moaned in response and it earned me a forceful yet tender caress of his hand against my clit. He manipulated my bundle of nerves and within minutes my legs started to shake and I couldn’t keep my eyes open. He effortlessly made his way down my body, pushing his fingers into my opening and sucking on my nub in a back and forth motion.
My hands immediately gripped his hair and he grunted in satisfaction. I couldn’t take it anymore, the room started to spin and my breathing faltered.
“Hmm… ah… mmm…” I exhaled.
The next thing I knew, he was kissing me, and I tasted myself all over his mouth. It was intoxicating as much as it was arousing. He knew my body better than I did, spending hours upon hours exploring it until he memorized every last curve.
I heard a rustling of some sort and opened my eyes to see that he was opening a condom as he kicked off his slacks and boxer briefs. I watched with fascinated eyes as he rolled it up his big, hard cock, barely being able to contain my need for his body to once again be on top of mine.
He kissed me again, giving me exactly what I craved and placed the tip of his dick at my opening.
“I love you,” he whispered in between kissing me.
“I love you, too. More than anything,” I murmured, not breaking our kiss and eye contact.

About Mountain Charm:

“True love and sweet whispers, till death do us part;

Send someone to love my Appalachian heart.”

At the age of thirteen, Angelina Clark followed in the footsteps of her ancestors by casting an Appalachian love spell, which promised she would find her true love. A young Angelina had been thrilled to participate in the ritual, but through the years, her father’s untimely death and her mother’s illness have shaken Angelina’s magical faith to its core. Now, as her twenty-first birthday approaches, she refuses to practice her supernatural gifts and no longer believes in the love charm.

That is, until Dylan Thomas arrives on her front porch.

Dylan, a Nashville writer, travels to the mountain town of Maple Ridge to unearth the family’s supernatural secrets. While her clairvoyant mother is convinced that Dylan is her daughter’s soul mate, Angelina refuses to see the nosy reporter as anything more than a nuisance.

The two grow closer just as her mother’s health takes a turn for the worse. Faced with mounting medical bills, Angelina is faced with selling the family’s music shop to make ends meet. Desperate to help the woman he loves, Dylan explores his own family tree and finds support from an unlikely source.

Can Dylan prove his love is real—spell or no spell?

The bar was the biggest redneck tavern he’d ever seen in his life, but the music was loud and the beer was cheap.

Which would explain his present state of intoxication.

The bartender offered him another bottle, but Dylan declined. He needed to sober up if he had any chance of driving home tonight.

“You’re that reporter from Nashville, aren’t you? Doing the story on Angelina Clark and her mom.”

Dylan’s body shivered at the mention of her name, and he cursed under his breath. Escaping her, even in a dump like this, was impossible.

“They’re good people,” the bartender said.

Dylan couldn’t remember his name. Mel? Max? It was an M, definitely.

“Yes, they are.”

“Angelina’s a sweetheart,” the man continued. “That ex of hers sure treated her badly.”

Dylan nodded. “He better pray I never see him again, because if I do, I’ll beat the shit out of him.”

The bartender grinned and pointed toward the pool tables. “Is that a promise?”

Dylan couldn’t believe his eyes. Standing there, laughing and drinking with his buddies, was Adam McDonald.

They spotted each other at the same time, and Adam smirked. He said something to his friends and dropped his pool stick before heading to the bar.

“You look like you could use another,” Adam said, his voice slurring a little as he waved to the bartender. He slapped Dylan on the shoulder. “Look, man, I’m going to give you a little advice. If you’re waiting to get into Angelina’s pants, don’t bother, because you’ll be waiting a long time.”

Dylan’s entire body bristled at the mention of her name on the bastard’s lips. He wasn’t so drunk that he didn’t take a moment to consider the consequences of his actions.

This was a redneck bar, and it was quite possible he’d get his ass kicked.

Then he thought of Angelina’s sweet face, her pretty eyes, and her cinnamon kiss.

Worth it.

About Stirred:

25652454

I’m Eden MacLaird, and Fate screwed me good at the age of twenty-one, stole my first love, then my first child. Twenty years later, I still haven’t found my happily-ever-after. Sure, from the outside, I have it all, including Declan, my gorgeous, rich-as-sin husband. But things aren’t what they seem, and catching Declan in bed with my best friend destroys any dreams I harbor for love, much less sexual fulfillment.

Then in walks Sean Bennett…

Just months away from earning his post-graduate law degree, Sean’s smart, driven, and serious, but an unexpected encounter between us in a bar one night changes everything. His best friend, Trinitee, warns against getting too involved, but the heat between us is beyond intense, and neither of us are willing to walk away.

With my marriage in shambles, I’m eager to make a go of it with Sean, despite our sixteen-year age difference. But while I relish my sexual reawakening, I fear giving up the posh life I’ve grown accustomed to. That life, however, and everything in it, comes crashing down as bodies start piling up around us, and all clues point to me and Sean.

Secrets, betrayal, and revenge threaten to destroy not just my carefully-crafted reputation, but my very life. With our freedom at stake, Sean and I join forces to uncover those plotting against us. But as doubt and evidence mount, I must choose: give in to my suspicions and save myself, or trust our new-found love and save us both.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Anticipation (1)

Her hands caught mine and stilled it in place, not letting me go any farther, but not pushing me away either. She was very conflicted; that much was certain—the look in her eyes, the way she worried her bottom lip with her teeth. And it would work to my benefit, I was sure. But instead of emboldening me, it gave me pause, and my longing inexplicably shifted from what I wanted for myself, to what I wanted for her—to feel desired, to know she was someone’s fantasy, a dream come true. I would show her what she’d been missing all these years, what her husband had denied her, that she was worth the effort, worth giving to, worth loving. And in my sudden need to be what her husband had not, I felt a fullness swell inside me. Not just between my legs, or even my heart, but in my soul.

Caught in that epiphany, I leaned in, my mouth a mere inch from her right ear.

“What are you so afraid of, Eden?” I breathed, and slowly, I moved to face her, so close, all I had to do was stretch my neck, ever so slightly, and my mouth was on hers, gently, my tongue a flick against her lips as I brushed across it. Next, my mouth was at her left ear. “Why not take the risk?” I pressed but for a moment before my mouth reclaimed hers.

I kissed her deeply this time, my tongue probing for hers, and, after a moment’s hesitation, she met me head on. My hand between her knees pressed forward, not rough, but definitely insistent. Undeniable. Her hands, once a tense and formidable barrier, relaxed, though she kept them resting against mine as my fingers edged upward, gently easing her legs apart to allow me access. And there it was, the lacy edge of her panties, and an intense, scorching heat. My heart ricocheted in response.

Eden sucked in a soft hiss as her mouth retreated from mine, but, though she pulled back for a split-second, a half-hearted attempt to regroup and regain control, she knew, as well as I, that it was impossible, and her mouth returned to the one place we both knew it belonged, right against mine. But even that proved too much for her, and she dipped her chin to lean her forehead against my cheek as she panted in anticipation.

Because that’s what this was. Anticipation. I hadn’t really touched her—not yet. I hadn’t invaded the space her wedding vows had long ago promised to one man, and one man only. That anticipation she felt was her sense of decency and fidelity warring with her desire, the basest need a human could ever experience.

The Rock and Roll Queen of Bedlam by Marilee Brothers – Review and Blog Tour

  Review

 5 out of 5 Stars

*I received a copy of The Rock and Roll Queen of Bedlam in exchange for an honest review. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Allegra Thome teaches a band of misfits in high school, so she’s no stranger to foul language and danger. This comes in handy when one of her students goes missing and she’s thrown into the middle of the search for the young girl.

DEA Agent Sloan isn’t necessarily searching for the girl, but his attraction to Allegra forces him to help her out when she gets into trouble. Some of the information Allegra stumbles on to leads to the girl’s father, a criminal Sloan is interested in until the man turns up dead.

Allegra and her nephew employ all of their sleuthing skills and the help of family and friends to find the girl when the police write her off as a runaway teen. But they’ll need to act fast before they end up like several other people involved with the missing girl—dead.

The Rock and Roll Queen of Bedlam sucked me in early and kept me captivated right until the end with its outrageous mix of humor and mystery. Right off the bat, Allegra gets herself mixed up in things better left alone just by trying to talk to the parent of one of her students. She meets DEA Agent Sloan when she thinks he’s kidnapping her, but really he’s saving her from a drug bust. From there, things only get crazier. The mystery of the missing student begins, and we meet Allegra’s eccentric family, who keep the laughs coming throughout the story.

I loved the way Sloan and Allegra annoyed each other in their flirtations. These two characters couldn’t have a boring relationship if they tried. The mixture of comedy and heat between them made every interaction memorable. I particularly enjoyed the way Allegra described Sloan:

“Listen, Bud. This man is not my boyfriend. He follows me around for no reason. I think he has one of those tracking thingies on my car.”

Sloan is a sexy mystery every reader will want to unravel. He shows up at the oddest times and inserts himself into Allegra’s family with hilarity and intrigue. We don’t get a whole lot of information on him, but the attraction is still there and the heat between Sloan and Allegra is off the charts.

The story is actually more mystery and suspense than romance, but the mix with humor makes it a perfect light read. Although there are plenty of darker themes—kidnapping, drugs, corruption, spousal abuse—the wittiness of Allegra, Sloan, and the cast of secondary characters will keep you amused from start to finish. Even the intimate scenes have a dash of absurdity, with one set in the basement of a nursing home and one in the back of a hearse.

I truly enjoyed everything about The Rock and Roll Queen of Bedlam, and I would definitely read more by this author.

Happy reading!

Trash-talking, soft-hearted teacher Allegra Thome won’t let anything get in the way of her search for her missing student, least of all her attraction to Sloan, a rough-around-the-edges but totally irresistible DEA agent with an agenda entirely his own.

BABY, COME AND GET IT

Meet Allegra Thome. A teacher for behavior-disordered teens by day and a karaoke singer by night, this leggy blonde knows just where to find trouble—like Sloan, a tough, sexy DEA agent, in the middle of a drug bust. He clears her of all charges, but their intense chemistry leads to some passionate encounters in…unusual locations.

Their unorthodox romance is put on hold when one of Allegra’s students, Sara Stepanek, goes missing. Through cryptic messages and bizarre codes in a journal the girl hints at psychological manipulation and foul play, and suddenly Allegra doesn’t know who to trust. Even Sloan has his own reasons for wanting to find Sara. Time is running out in the frantic search, and Allegra will learn the answers she seeks are more shocking—and deadly—than she could ever imagine.
KEYNOTE
Leggy, karaoke-signing Allegra Thome spends her days teaching dysfunctional teens and her nights with wealthy new boyfriend, Michael. The rough patch following Allegra’s divorce is over, and life is grand. But when Allegra lands in the middle of a drug bust and meets Sloan, a rough-around-the-edges DEA agent and, later that day, a kid from her class disappears, things quickly head south. Sloan, who has the tact of a roadside bomb, is attracted to Allegra and alienates Michael. To make matters worse, nobody seems to care that Allegra’s student, Sara Stepanek, is missing. Allegra’s search for Sara becomes a race against time with dead bodies piling up and her own life in peril.

“Panty hose are a tool of the devil. On a tall woman, the crotch hangs at knee level, so she’s forced to crouch and shuffle like Quasimodo. If a woman’s vertically challenged, the things slither downward, pooling around her ankles like a reptilian second skin. My troubles began with panty hose.”

The Origin of Lush

Ideas for stories come to writers in all sorts of different ways. And for me it’s been different each time I’ve written a book. I started the Hiding From Love series after I dreamed the first book. It went through some different iterations after that initial dream, but the core of the story remained the same.

The Lush series, appropriately, originated in a song. Long Black Veil was a song originally written by The Band in 1968, then made famous by Johnny Cash. It was covered by Dave Matthews Band a few decades later, and that was the version I first heard.

Long Black Veil tells the story of a man who is accused of killing his best friend in an old west town. The accusation is sketchy and the justice is swift, ending with the man’s execution. But the song tells us that he had an alibi he didn’t use. His alibi was his best friend’s wife…who he’d been having an affair with.

So, we have a story where the wife and her husband’s best friend are in bed together while her husband is out on a street getting shot. When her lover goes to trial, the woman doesn’t step forward, and even though he was cheating with his best friend’s wife, the main character has some integrity left, and he won’t reveal the widow’s infidelity.

The chorus of the song is this:
She walks these hills in a long black veil
She visits my grave where the night winds wail
Nobody knows, no, and nobody sees
Nobody knows but me.

(Those of you who have read the first book in the Lush series, A Lush Betrayal, should recognize significant elements of the story by now.)

Long Black Veil is a short little song, just three verses and the chorus, but as any well-written words can do, it raises powerful emotions and issues. Those emotions and issues were what sparked the idea of the Lush series, and they carry on throughout all four books.

When I listened to Long Black Veil what I thought of was, “is there a way to take this and give it a happy ending?” See, I hate sad endings (hence the whole romance writing gig), and this one crushed my heart. So I set out to take the idea—two friends—as close as brothers, one woman, a horrible mistake, and the ideas of guilt, consequence, repentance, and forgiveness. From that was born the story of Joss, Walsh, Tammy, and the band that loves them all.

My newest release, A LUSH REUNION, gives the whole group the happy endings that Long Black Veil couldn’t. I hope you like reading it as much as I loved writing it!

Series Playlist

The Lush series is about a rock band, the story originated from a song, and music has been a very important part of writing the books too. Here is a playlist of some of the most important songs (according to me!) for each of the books in the series. Take a listen and tell me if you see story or character elements from Lush when you hear these songs:

A Lush Betrayal:
Long Black Veil
Fortunate Son
My City of Ruins

Loving a Lush:
Still I Long For Your Kiss
Life By the Drop
I Lost It

Lowdown and Lush:
Wicked Way
Never My Love
Kid Rock – Cowboy

A Lush Reunion:
